Station House was an existing Public House building, located near Chiswick train station in West London.

Consent was the change of use of the upper floors, and various external changes, were granted for 4 residential apartments retaining the Public House on ground floor. The external works involve the extrusion of the butterfly roof form to create an extension which reads as part of the existing structure.

The smaller outbuilding was reconfigured to create additional internal floor space. The floor was lowered, and the roof raised slightly, to ensure the changes to this locally listed building was kept to a minimum.

New and reconfigured windows openings were detailed to mimic the style of the existing building. The idea was that the extension, over time, would appear not as an extension, but as the original intended design when this was built during the industrial revolution.

This concept extended to the choice of materials – which were selected to match the existing fabric. The bricks were reclaimed from the demolition phase, and reused as part of the extension.  To ensure longevity of the design, we proposed a new internal primary and secondary structural system.

A communal garden was created, on the roof of the smaller building, to offset the lack of private amenity available due to the constraints of the existing listed building. Screening is provided to ensure privacy from the neighbouring properties.

Works were completed in May 2024 using a Traditional JCT contract. Its completion represents a key example of our ethos to retain and reuse existing buildings and materials to reduce the carbon footprint of our designs.
