Liverpool Hope University Sheppard Worlock library

Liverpool

Liverpool Hope University wanted to refurbish the existing Sheppard Worlock library within their campus. The brief was to provide a high-quality library which accommodated private and flexible study areas, improved IT facilities, catering facilities, and a pressurised storage vault for historic documents.

Works involved the internal refurbishment of a collection of buildings and the creation of an external connection. An outbuilding was used to house the high pressurised storage facility for particularly historically important and sensitive documents.

The library was separated into different zones – entrance; café; book storage; quiet study zones; flexible study zones; I.T facilities and storage. Interior fixtures, fittings and colours were used to differentiate these spaces.

Concept images were provided for individual storage pods which were inspired by the library’s ecclesiastical connection. The 1980’s staircase was hidden by bespoke bookcases. This also helped to improve the flow of the space – to avoid dead spaces which typically occur underneath and around large staircases.

Works were completed in 2012.
